Heartburn, also known as acid reflux, is a health problem experienced by many people. It is pain resulting from stomach acid entering the esophagus. If you suffer from mild heartburn on an occasional basis, it can be treated naturally with remedies like Ginger, Bitters, Milk Thistle or even Atlhea (Marshmallow Plant)

There are also several natural ways to prevent mild forms of acid reflux. Here are five tips for avoiding heartburn.

1. Avoid foods and beverages that trigger heartburn. Alcohol (especially red wine), caffeine, citrus fruits and juices, raw onions, tomatoes, black pepper, and other spices are all problematic. They all stimulate stomach acid volatility.

2. Loosen your belt. Tight belts and other snugly-fitting wardrobe items (such as girdles and control underwear) that constrict the abdomen should be avoided. Such clothing prevents food from moving normally from the stomach through the digestive tract.

3. Eat less and eat more slowly. Overeating, especially if you are eating quickly, can result in excess stomach acid splashing into the oesophagus. It is better to eat several modest servings each day, rather than two or three large meals.

4. Avoid late suppers. It is also advisable to finish eating the evening meal at least four hours before bedtime. This ensures that most of the meal is digested before you lie down. As a result, the stomach is nearly empty and the stomach acid is not active.

5. Adjust your bed. People who suffer from heartburn are advised to elevate the pillow end of the bed by approximately three inches. If there is any food in the stomach when you lie down, the incline of your torso will prevent acid from flowing up into the oesophagus.
